Squirrels In Southern Maine Can Be More Than Just Distracting
It is a common sight to see squirrels in Southern Maine. They are so common you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who could not point out a squirrel in a lineup of animals. We also know a lot about squirrels in Southern Maine. We know that they can climb a tree and cling to a tree sideways. We know that they can bound across a fence as easy as bounding across the ground. We know that they eat nuts. But it is amazing how much most people don't know about squirrels. Today, we're going to talk a little bit about some things we should all know about squirrels.
1. Squirrels carry ticks. Lots and lots of ticks.
A single squirrel can have more than a hundred seed ticks on its body. If you're not familiar with what a seed tick is, it is a six-legged baby tick. These tiny baby ticks can be as small as a speck. When squirrels bring seed ticks into your yard, those tiny ticks fall off as they develop into six-legged nymphs. This can expose your dog, cats and everyone living in your home to tick-borne diseases—Lyme disease being only one of several dangerous diseases.
2. That hole in your screen was probably created by a squirrel.
If you lure squirrels near your home by putting peanuts out for them, don't be surprised when you start seeing holes in your porch screens, door screens and window screens. A squirrel has no trouble chewing through screen material. If it thinks there might be a treat hiding inside, it is going to chew a quick hole to find out.
3. Squirrels can easily get into your Southern Maine home.
You would be amazed at how easily a squirrel can get into your home if it wants to. It can run down a tree branch, jump onto your roof, chew through a gasket around a roof penetration or through a roof soffit intersection and climb right into your attic. They can also make quick work of a gable vent cover.
4. Squirrels make terrible house guests.
You might think that it would be fun having a cute little squirrel living with you, but squirrels don't respect property. They leave their droppings everywhere. They soak insulation and wood with urine. They rip up insulation, sheetrock and other building materials to get material for their nests. They don't mean to do these things. They're just acting like squirrels.
5. A hungry squirrel will do anything to get to some birdseed.
If you have bird feeders near your home, don't be surprised when you see lots of squirrels. Squirrels can make a meal out of bird seed. There are many foods squirrels eat that are considered attractants. Removing them can reduce squirrel activity in your yard. One of the biggest is pest creatures such as small insects, caterpillars and sometimes mice. If you have a good pest control plan for your yard, you will have an indirect impact on squirrel activity.
6. Squirrels get into trash.
In the pursuit of food sources, squirrels sometimes get into dumpsters and trash cans. This exposes them to many harmful forms of bacteria. While they are not considered a significant disease threat, they can be a threat under the right circumstances.
