Six Easy Tips To Keep Silverfish Out Of Your Connecticut Home

When silverfish get into Connecticut homes, they can do quite a bit of unexpected damage. Imagine taking a wedding dress out of storage and finding holes in it. Imagine pulling a paperback book out and finding the cover so marred that you can't even read the title of the book. Imagine going into your guest room and discovering large patches where the wallpaper has been eaten. These are common issues with silverfish. If this isn't enough to not want to have silverfish in your Connecticut home, they can also get into your pantry foods. Fortunately, you don't have to put up with silverfish. There are ways to control them. Here are six easy tips to help you keep silverfish out.

1. Reduce Humidity

Silverfish need more humidity than you do. If you have areas of your home that stay humid, such as your basement, you may have trouble with silverfish. Reducing the humidity can make these areas uncomfortable for silverfish. Consider installing fans to vent the humidity, or get a dehumidifier. A dry room is a silverfish resistant room.

2. Protect Your Food

One of the best ways to protect yourself from silverfish and other pantry pests is to invest in glass or plastic containers that have a seal. While this won't keep silverfish out of your home, it will keep them from finding the food they need in order to thrive. If silverfish thrive, they're going to grow their population. The more silverfish you have, the more you'll see them, and the more damage they can cause. This is a simple change that can make your home more resistant to many pests.

3. Seal Entry Points

Silverfish get into your home because they can. Unlike carpenter ants, mice, rats, and other pests that damage wood, silverfish don't chew a pathway into your home. They use existing holes, and they are likely to take advantage of the pathways created by wood-destroying pests because they're attracted to the damp conditions that lead to wood rot. You can keep silverfish out by finding areas of your home where wood is rotted, and by sealing these holes. A temporary fix is to use a high-quality silicone caulk. Also, inspect your foundation walls, and the seals around windows, doors, pipes, and wire conduits. If you find any gaps, seal them.

While silverfish are prone to get into your home through holes in moist, damaged wood, and through gaps in your exterior, they may also get in through other common entry points, such as:

  • Damaged screens and damaged window panes
  • Gaps in weatherstripping
  • Damaged door sweeps or door stops
  • Chipped mortar
  • Damaged exhaust vents

4. Remove Debris

If you have fewer silverfish near your home, you'll have fewer silverfish getting into your home. Silverfish are drawn to moist habitats and organic debris. Rake leaves away from your home. Pick sticks up. If you have woodpiles, construction materials, or some other wood source near your home, move them away.

5. Reduce Moisture

Dampness around the perimeter of your home will create the perfect place for silverfish to explore. While you can't eliminate moisture on the outside of your home, you can reduce it significantly.

  • Trim the vegetation in your landscaping. This allows the sunlight to dry surface moisture, and it allows for better airflow.
  • Inspect your gutters and clear any obstructions. Repair damaged splash guards and downspouts.
  • Repair any plumbing issues or leaky hoses.
