Ticks
What are ticks?
Ticks are insects belonging to the family Ixodidae. Ticks are parasitic pests that feed on the blood of other animals, such as dogs, cats, deer, raccoons and mice. Ticks are often found in wooded areas, tall grass, and shrubs.
What do they look like?
Ticks have flattened oval shaped bodies before feeding. After they feed, ticks appear larger and more rounded. Adult ticks are typically about 1/8 of an inch long before feeding. Ticks are usually orange-brown, to reddish-brown in color, but may appear blue-gray to olive when fully engorged with blood.
Do ticks bite?
Yes, ticks may attack humans and pets while looking for a blood meal.
Are ticks dangerous?
Yes. Ticks can spread many diseases to humans while feeding, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
What are the signs of a tick infestation?
Unfortunately, tick bites often go unnoticed. Carefully check over your pet for ticks as frequently as possible, as this is really the only way to verify that you have a tick problem.
Why do I have a tick problem?
Ticks cannot jump or fly. If you have a tick in your home it was brought in on either you or on your pet.
