What are termites?

The eastern subterranean termite is the most common termite in Rhode Island. They are small wood destroying insects that feed on cellulose materials, especially wood and paper.

What do they look like?

Worker termites are white and do not have wings. They are about 1/8 of an inch long and are very soft bodied. Winged termites, or swarmers, belong to the reproductive caste. They are almost 1/2 inch long and are all black. They have two pairs of equal sized wings.

Do termites bite?

Termites will not bite or harm humans.

Are termites dangerous?

The danger from termites comes from their ability to damage a structure. It is estimated that termites cause over $5 billion of damage each year in the United States.

Termite damage is often confused with rotting wood. Carefully inspect any damaged wood that you find around your home for termites.
