Squirrels

What are squirrels?

Squirrels are small to medium sized rodents from the family Sciuridae. Because they are rodents they have constantly growing incisors and therefore have the need to constantly chew to make sure that their teeth do not overgrow. They are commonly found outdoors, but in urban areas, have become somewhat reliant on humans for their food sources.

What do they look like?

A squirrel’s appearance will vary from species to species, but in general they have slender bodies, with a bushy tail and large eyes.

Do squirrels bite?

Squirrels have the ability to bite, however a healthy squirrel will rarely, if ever, bite unless they are directly being threatened with the possibility of being handled.

Are squirrels dangerous?

Squirrels are dangerous, not necessarily to humans but to their property. Squirrels will chew through and damage the structure of homes and personal property, including electrical wiring, which is a fire hazard.

What are the signs of a squirrel infestation?

Signs of a squirrel infestation in your home are similar to other rodent infestations. Finding feces in cabinets, pantries and in the corners of floors is a very common sign of squirrel infestation. Noticing that food bags and boxes have been chewed through; having wire, pipes and insulation chewed through and damaged in your home. Another sign may be hearing scratching and scurrying sounds coming from behind walls or your attic.

Why do I have a squirrel problem?

Squirrels will enter into homes in the late fall months to seek warm shelter over the winter months; they will also enter homes to find a safe place to nest in. They will be attracted to properties that have easy access to food, warmth and water sources.

How do I get rid of squirrels?

Squirrels can be difficult and dangerous to eliminate from your home and property. In general professional help will be needed. If you need help with wildlife control for squirrels in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or Connecticut contact Big Blue Bug Solutions today.

Squirrel prevention tips from Big Blue Bug Solutions

There are many ways to prevent squirrels from choosing and entering your property. Make sure to keep trees, bushes and other vegetation trimmed away from the exterior of your home. Make sure that any holes or crevices in your home’s foundation are sealed. Caulk gaps around exterior windows and doors and keep a tight fitting cap on your chimney. Also make sure that bird feeders located on your property are located a distance from the exterior of your home.
