Silverfish
What are silverfish?
Silverfish are small insects that are common pests in Providence, Worcester, and throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New England. Unlike most insects, silverfish only have three stages in their life cycle. Female silverfish can lay eggs at any time of the year and it typically takes three to four months for them to grow from egg to adult. Silverfish eat anything that contains starch or polysaccharides. This can include paper, photos, wallpaper glue and book bindings.
What do they look like?
Silverfish have flat bodies that are between 1/2 and 1 inch in length. They have 3 bristles that protrude from the rear of their abdomen. Silverfish obtain their name from their appearance; they are silver in color and when they move they have a fish-like motion.
Do silverfish bite?
No, silverfish do not bite or sting.
Are silverfish dangerous?
