Raccoons

What are raccoons?

Raccoons are mammals that are part of the procyonid family. Raccoons are generally found outdoors in wooded areas near a water source; however they have become somewhat reliant on humans for food and have become a common problem in urban environments.

What do they look like?

Raccoons are most often identified by their black mask of fur around their eyes. Raccoons back legs are longer than their front legs, which cause their hunched appearance when they are walking. They are about 3 feet in length, which includes their bushy, ringed tail; depending on their environment and the availability of food, they can weigh between 15 and 40 pounds.

Do raccoons bite?

Raccoons can be very aggressive and will bite or scratch if they feel threatened.

Are raccoons dangerous?

Raccoons can be dangerous to have on your property or in your home; raccoons are common carriers of rabies and other serious diseases that can be passed onto you and your pets. If you or a pet come into contact with a raccoon and are bitten or scratched you should seek immediate medical attention. Inside of your home raccoons can be very damaging to the structure of your home and your personal property.

There are many things that you can do around your home and property to try to prevent raccoons from invading. Make sure to keep secure lids on outdoor garbage cans and store them away from the exterior of your home. Gardens and compost piles should also be made a distance away from the exterior of your home. All windows, vents and chimneys leading into your home should always be securely covered.
