What are pavement ants?
The pavement ant, Tetramorium caespitum, is a very small species of ant that gets its name from its propensity to nest in and under cracks of pavement. They were introduced to the United States from Europe in the 1700s or 1800s and now range from New England to the Midwest and as far south as Tennessee.
What do they look like?
Pavement ants are a small species of ant, with the workers reaching about 1/8 of an inch long. They are brown to black, with lighter colored legs and antennae.
Do pavement ants bite?
Pavement ants can bite and do have a stinger on their last abdominal segment; however, they rarely bite or sting humans.
Are pavement ants dangerous?
No, pavement ants are considered nuisance pests.
