What is an Oriental cockroach?
The Oriental cockroach is a large cockroach species that can be found in the Northeast. They are found in high humidity areas of your home or business, such as basements, sink areas, bathrooms, and in washing machines. Because of their attraction to moist areas they are commonly called water bugs.
What do they look like?
The Oriental cockroach is a large cockroach species that can grow up to one inch in length, and are a shiny dark brown color. The female of this species has a wide body with short wings, while the male’s body is narrower and has longer wings; however, neither the female nor male are able to fly.
Do Oriental cockroaches bite?
They have the ability bite humans, but rarely if ever do. Unless it becomes infected the bite should not harm you.
Are Oriental cockroaches dangerous?
While they do not bite or sting they do feed and live in areas that harbor dangerous bacteria, such as sewers, garbage disposals, dumpsters and bathroom areas. The oriental cockroach will carry the bacteria on their body and contaminate your food and food prep areas, the bacteria can cause vomiting, fever and diarrhea. These cockroaches will shed their skin and leave excrement behind and in some people the allergens from those will cause severe asthma attacks.
What are the signs of an Oriental cockroach infestation?

Since moisture is what attracts these pests into your home, repair any leaky pipes in your basement, kitchen and bathroom areas. You should also eliminate excessive moisture by running a dehumidifier in areas prone to moisture issues. Also, repair cracks in your foundation to prevent them from being able to enter your home. You should also inspect items bought from stores and laundry mats before bringing them into your home. Also, try to keep food up off of your kitchen counters in sealed containers or in the refrigerator to prevent them from being used as a food source.
