Millipede

What are millipedes?

Millipedes are small arthropods, not insects. They have two legs per body segment. While their name means “thousand legs”, they do not have that many. They typically have between 80 and 400 legs.

What do they look like?

Millipedes are usually about 1 to 2 inches long, but may grow to be larger, depending on which exact species it is.  They are usually either black or brown in color. They have very round bodies and are very recognizable by their many legs.  As they walk, their legs appear to move in a wave-like motion.

Do millipedes bite?

No, millipedes do not bite or sting.

Are millipedes dangerous?

Millipedes do not pose any danger to humans. However, when they feel threatened they can release a foul smelling fluid that can cause skin irritation and it should be washed off immediately.

What are the signs of a millipede infestation?

Millipedes do not leave behind many signs to let you know that you have an infestation. The only real sign is to find the pests themselves.

Why do I have a millipede problem?

Millipedes spend most of their time feeding on decaying vegetable matter. They occasionally find their way into our homes, but will quickly die due to lack of moisture.

How do I get rid of millipedes?

Millipedes occasionally migrate in large numbers. When this happens they can be very difficult to control. Professional help is usually needed. If you have a problem with millipedes in your Providence, RI; Worcester, MA; or Shrewsbury, MA, home, contact Big Blue Bug Solutions today!

Millipede prevention tips from Big Blue Bug Solutions

millipede on the ground

A millipede must have extremely high humidity levels to live. Lowering the humidity in your home will help make it much less attractive to millipedes.  Additionally, seal all possible entry points that the pests could use to get into your home and clean your yard of decaying wood, grass, and leaves.  Call us today to learn more about our millipede control options.
