Bats

What are bats?

Bats are a common wildlife problem that occurs throughout homes in Rhode Island and New England; they carry disease including rabies and therefore should be dealt with by bat control professionals. They look to homes to find a safe place roost in during the day, and then leave during the night to forage for food.

What do they look like?

There are two common types of bats in Rhode Island and throughout New England; they are the little brown bat and the big brown bat.

  • Little brown bat-They are 2 ½ to 3 ¾ of an inch in length, with females being on the larger side. They are glossy brown in color with a wingspan of 8-11 inches. Their ears are rounded and black in color.
  • Big brown bat-They are larger than the little brown bat at about 4-5 inches in length with a wingspan of 11-13 inches. Their fur is medium in length and dark brown; their ears, feet and face are dark brown to black in color.

Do bats bite?

Bats do have the potential to bite humans if they are cornered or feel threatened, because of this and their potential to have rabies they should not be handled. If you have detected bats in your home contact Big Blue Bug Solutions today.

Are bats dangerous?

Bats do pose a serious threat to humans as they carry many pathogens and parasites that can be passed on. They are most known for being a carrier of rabies and their feces can introduce a fungus called histoplasmosis that can lead to lung disease. They will also introduce fleas, mites and bats bugs into your home.
