4 Tips To Avoid Chipmunk Damage In South Portland

Chipmunks are cute. But the damage they cause isn't. These critters become pests when they get into gardens, dig holes under man-made structures, and chew on exterior wood. When they get into a home, they chew on wires, chew up insulation, make holes in sheetrock, and leave their feces and urine everywhere they go. And, like other furry animals, chipmunks can introduce parasites into a home, such as lice, mites, ticks and fleas. While these rodents aren't as content to live inside your home as mice or rats, they can definitely share your house long enough to make themselves unwelcome, especially when cold temperatures drive them in for the winter. Here are some ideas to keep them out.

  1. Protect your garden. - If you have a garden, chipmunks will love you for it. It is important to keep your garden protected all year long. We recommend installing a fence around your garden. Make sure to put it into the ground at least 6 inches to prevent chipmunks from digging under.
  2. Hide and secure other food sources. - Chipmunks are opportunistic eaters. If you give them food options, they'll frequent your yard. And, if they are frequenting your yard, there is more chance they can cause problems for you. That is why it is important to make sure your exterior trash cans are sealed and secured. A good seal on a trash can will not only keep chipmunks out, but it will also keep that tasty smell in. While you may not find the smell of trash pleasing, those chipmunks sure do, and it will draw them into your yard. These little critters are also drawn to bird feeders. If you have seeds lying on the ground, or a feeder that can be accessed, you'll attract chipmunks and other yard rodents.
  3. Seal entry points in your walls. When chipmunks get close to your exterior walls, you want to make sure they don't see any holes. Like all rodents, chipmunks will be happy to make small holes larger. Use a caulking gun to fill in any holes you find, as well as gaps around plumbing and electrical wires.
  4. Call a professional. There is no better way to control wildlife on your property, and reduce wildlife invasion, than having periodic inspections from a professional, and ongoing exclusions and trapping. When you protect your yard and property from chipmunks, you'll also be keeping rats, mice, squirrels, voles, and other rodents under control. That will keep your family, your pets, and your home healthier.
