How Summer Spiders Break Into New England Homes

There are many species of spiders in the world, about 40,000! That may not be your most favorite fact to learn, but the good news is that we live in an area that doesn’t include all of those species. In fact, we’ve narrowed down the most common spiders we see enter New England homes to just three.

Yellow Sac spiders, as their name suggests, are yellow. They have eight eyes arranged in two rows, and they grow to about ⅜ of an inch. Their leg span can reach an inch long.

House spiders are usually light brown in color and have a rounded abdomen. Their bodies reaches about ¼ of an inch.

Black Widow spiders are shiny black in color, and females have a signature red, hourglass-shaped marking on their abdomen. The bodies of black widows can reach ½ an inch in length.

Why are spiders in my home?

As we see the weather continually warm over the next few months, we will observe a lot more activity from insects. You may see flies buzzing around your trash can, the fruit bowl, around windows, and other places in and around your home. As insects bombard New England properties, so will spiders! Some insects may even be overwintering in your home, and you’ll see them emerging around this time. As they emerge, you may notice spiders emerging, as well. Typically, they remain in corners, cracks in window sills, and areas with low human activity. Their webs are often seen more than the spider themselves.

So, you just found out that not only are you dealing with spiders, but you probably have lots of other insects around.

Here are a few ways that all these bugs may be getting inside:

  • Cracks and small holes along the exterior of your house can allow an entryway for these pests. It’s beneficial to inspect and seal any cracks or crevices found around the exterior of your home.
  • Sometimes spiders dwell under siding or around door cracks.
  • Lack of screens, or doors left open for too long, can also allow spiders a way in.
  • Trash is a big attractant for flies, so be sure to empty trash bins frequently and keep them covered with tight-fitting lids.

Once spiders have entered your home, they can be difficult to eliminate. Since they’re excellent at remaining hidden in hard-to-reach locations, professional pest control is usually needed to eradicate spiders.
