Some bugs are more unappealing than others. If you see a ladybug in your house, it’s no big deal. They’re even kind of cute. On the other hand, if you see a big hairy spider, yuck! Many times it doesn’t even matter if they’re dangerous or not. Some bugs just freak us out more than others.
However, there are some bugs that are both unsightly and dangerous. Cockroaches fit that bill quite nicely. If you happen to see a cockroach in your house, you don’t want to brush it off as no big deal.
In fact, you’ll want to take immediate action, not only to eliminate the cockroach you saw, but to determine if there are more hiding in other parts of your home. If you’ve seen one, more are likely nearby. These are not bugs you want running rampant throughout your home.
Why Cockroaches are Dangerous
Cockroaches are not only unappetizing, they’re also dangerous. They are fast movers, able to run up to three miles per hour, and can go from a garbage can or bathroom to your kitchen counter with relative ease.
As they travel, cockroaches leave behind germs, bacteria, and parasites they’ve picked up from unsanitary places they’ve visited. They contaminate your prep areas and food stores. Cockroaches have been known to transmit all kinds of illnesses and diseases, including Salmonella, E. coli, dysentery, cholera, and even leprosy.
Cockroaches shed their skin and leave behind feces that can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in some people. These are not insects you want in your home.
How to Prevent Cockroaches
If you are sure that you don’t currently have a cockroach problem, there are certain things you can do to keep the status quo:
- Cockroaches require moist, humid environments. Make sure that your home has no leaking pipes, water-damaged areas, or rooms with high humidity. If you discover any of these, correct the problem immediately.
- Keep the outside of your home as moisture-free as possible.
- Check around the perimeter of your home for cracks, holes, and gaps in the foundation, siding, and around windows and doors. Seal, repair, or caulk any that you find, as they may be possible entry points for cockroaches.
- Remove garbage from your home on a regular basis. If you have garbage bins outside, store them away from your house and make sure they are tightly sealed.
