Chipmunks: The Unwanted Fall Visitor

|

Though the weather outside isn't frightful just yet, it is right around the corner, and chipmunks are already starting their mad dash to store food for the winter, hiding acorns in flower beds, gardens, trees, and maybe even your South Portland home.

Chipmunks can be identified by their bushy tails, stubby legs and the very noticeable white, black and brown stripes that run down their backs. Chipmunks are actually a type of squirrel, the smallest members of the squirrel family. The largest type of chipmunk, the Eastern chipmunk grows to be around 11 inches long and can weigh up to 4.4 ounces. Chipmunks make their homes in burrows made up of underground tunnel systems or they create nests in logs or bushes, but they sometimes get inside homes and cause damage.

Dangers Of Chipmunks In Homes

While it is relatively rare for chipmunks to make their homes inside houses, it does sometimes happen, or sometimes a chipmunk "accidentally" enters a home and becomes trapped.

It is important to understand that if a chipmunk has found its way into your wall void or attic space, they could cause damage with their constant need to chew. These pests have to chew to stop their ever-growing incisors from growing too large, this can lead to insulation and wood damages, not to mention fire risk if they decide to chew on the wrong electrical wire.

If a chipmunk accidentally enters a home and is trapped. It can become panicked and knock over items or destroy screens and other materials while trying to escape.

If cornered or provoked, a chipmunk may bite. Always take care when dealing with any wild animal, no matter how small.

How To Rodent Proof Your Home

To keep chipmunks and other pests from entering your home, there are several things you can do. First, remove all unnecessary clutter from your yard. Animals and insects love to hide under woodpiles, construction materials and other objects. Address any water leaks that you may have that could be causing wood rot. If your walls are wet, it is easier for pests to chew their way into your home. Carefully inspect for gaps, cracks or holes in your foundation and walls, and seal up any holes found. Remove any food sources from your yard that may be drawing pests in close to your home. And make sure that, if pests do get inside, they don't find water or food sources there either.
