Experts Expect An Increase In Lyme Disease

Here in South Portland, we are all too aware that Lyme disease is an increasing problem. What was once a disease "other people" got, seems to be everywhere now. And, this is not an illness to take lightly. Lyme disease can cause fever, lethargy, swollen joints and lymph nodes, loss of appetite, and an overall tiredness in dogs. When it strikes people, it can lead to lifelong medical issues with many symptoms that mimic other diseases, such as arthritis, migraines, fibromyalgia, meningitis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, and Bell's palsy. But experts believe it is about to get worse, especially in the Northeastern United States.

Scientists studying Lyme disease have noticed a trend that is unmistakable. There seems to be a distinct correlation between summer mouse populations and the number of new Lyme disease cases that will appear the next year. Why? Because deer ticks (the ticks that are the main vector for Lyme disease) are small, and an individual mouse can carry as many as 100 deer ticks on its body. If that mouse gets into a home or business, it will spread those ticks around as it forages for food, thus making rodent control essential in the battle to prevent Lyme disease.

You may not be aware of this, but we had quite a rise in our mouse population last summer. If the studies are correct, and mouse populations are connected to Lyme disease cases, it is vital that we take extra precautions this summer to get mice out and keep them out.

The most effective way to guard against mouse infestations is to have ongoing pest service from a professional. Through routine inspections, surveillance, and trapping, as well as a focused effort to control attractants, mice and other rodents can be excluded.

There are other important reasons to keep mice out, as well.

  • Mice spread harmful bacteria.
  • Mice chew on wood, creating holes and damaging insulation.
  • Mice chew on wires and present a fire hazard.
  • Mice can carry other diseases besides Lyme.
