That's right sports lovers, we have an incredible match for you today as we pit the ferocious centipede up against the clever and wily millipede, to see which contender will survive this battle to the death. This may be the most exciting battle in arthropod history! Let's find out.
In our left corner measuring between ⅛ of an inch and 6 inches long is the centipede. He doesn't look happy, folks. This bug looks like he has come to punish his opponent. Look at the way he quickly responds to any movement around him. This is truly a fierce competitor. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not in the ring with him.
In our right corner measuring between 1/16 of an inch and 4 ½ inches is the millipede. Normally found in areas of high moisture and under decaying vegetation, trash, grass clippings, leaves and mulch, this smooth backed bug looks right at home in the ring.
The bell has sounded and our fighters are on the move. The centipede being the fierce predator that he is has taken to circling the millipede and clinging to the ropes with his 15 to 177 pairs of legs. This odd number of legs seems to be helping him maintain an incredible amount of balance.
The millipede, with its 30 to 90 pairs of legs that shoot straight down is like a machine as it moves to the center of the ring, completely undaunted by the centipede's quick movements and ominous presence. I'm guessing he has something up his sleeve for sure. Hold on! Wait a second! Something is happening. Slits are opening on the side of the millipede and a foul-smelling fluid is seeping out. The centipede seems aware that this toxic fluid can be toxic even to small animals and is known to leave small blisters on the skin of humans. He is keeping his distance and looking for the right moment to strike. The tension in the arena is almost palpable, as we wait to see what the centipede will do.
Every eye is on the poisonous jaws of the centipede, which are strong enough to break the skin of humans and inflict a painful bite. Usually, only when they are handled wrongly. But still! It could easily take down the millipede with one bite.
The millipede has sensed that this is a dangerous situation. You can hear a pin drop in this auditorium. What will he do? Hold on! Something's happening!! Nothing interesting though, I'm afraid. It appears the millipede has curled in a spiral in the middle of the ring and the centipede has lost all interest. Sounds of loud booing are filling the room now. I think a lot of people are going to want their money back on this one. We're going to have to go to a hard break. Assuming these two invertebrates decide to actually fight, we'll be back with you in a few minutes.
