What Winter Weather Means For Insects And Rodents

home in Attleboro during the winter
|

For many people this winter has reminded them of the movie “Groundhog Day”. Every day is very much the same- snow, snow and more snow. And just to mix it up, in between snow storms there is bitter cold and heavy winds. Just as this weather has been very hard on us, it has been hard on winter insects and rodents. This year pests have been finding their way into homes and other buildings in very high numbers and while we can’t blame them, we still don’t want them in our home and need to do everything we can to keep them out.

Big Blue Bug Solutions wants to help you keep pests out of your home this winter by providing you with some information on why you need to keep winter pests out of your home, how the winter weather is actually helping them, and what you can do to stop them.

Why do pests need to stay out of your home?

Winter insects and rodents can cause a lot of damage to the structure of your home by damaging wires, pipes, and insulation. This can all lead to water damage, mold issues, and even fires. They can contaminate your food and introduce diseases into your home, including Salmonellosis, which can make you and your family very ill. Winter pests can damage personal items, including furniture, pictures, clothing, and flooring as they feed on or nest in those items. Basically, it is safe to say that nothing good can come from having winter pests living inside of your home!

How is the winter weather helping pests get into your home?

Wind, snow, ice, and the cold air are all encouraging and helping winter pests enter into your home.

  • Wind- The strong winds of winter storms can cause a lot of damage to your home. High winds can rip shingles off of your roof, tear siding off of your home, and damage doors and windows. Because of this it is important to routinely inspect your roof for loose shingles, the exterior of your home for holes or gaps in the siding, or for any damages along windows and doors.
  • Snow- When there is a lot of snow and it starts to build-up around your house, it can hide cracks and crevices that can allow pests to get inside your home. The snow can also help them to gain access to parts of your home that they otherwise may not be able to reach.
  • Ice- As snow falls and melts over the winter, ice can build up on your roof. This can cause water to not be able to properly drain from your roof. The excess water and moisture can seep into your home causing damages and mold issues that may attract a variety of pests to your home.

What can I do to prevent winter pests?

In order to protect your home against winter pests you need to be vigilant and inspect the exterior of your home on a regular basis, no matter how cold or snowy it is out there. If you discover any gaps, holes, or spaces in the exterior of your home they should be repaired as quickly as possible.
