Cockroaches are one of the most notorious pests found in homes throughout Worcester, Framingham and surrounding areas in New England.  Just the sound of the word cockroach makes people cringe.  But do we really know them?

Here are 5 strange facts about roaches:

  1. The ‘American’ cockroach did not originate in America.  They most likely immigrated to America via ships from Africa in the 1600’s.
  2. The American cockroach lays 10 or more "ootheca" (egg cases) with each containing 14-16 eggs! Cockroaches engage in a courtship ‘dance’ to attract the male to the female.
  3. Roaches have their own odor that they emit to help locate each other and keep close.  They emit an “aggregation pheromone” that has a ‘musty’ smell also.
  4. Their droppings are often mistaken for mouse droppings in homes. However, mouse droppings are pointed and have hair in them while cockroach droppings have ridged sides and blunt ends.
  5. Roaches are reported to spread at the minimum, 33 different types of bacteria, 6 kinds of parasitic worms and at least 7 other human pathogens. So when we talk about the threats of roaches, now you know why!
