Ah yes, it’s that time of year again. Summer, also known as mosquito season has finally arrived in New England. It has many of us wondering just how bad these bloodthirsty pests are going to be this year.
The extended forecast for Providence shows the potential for rainfall almost every day; likewise for Worcester. Why bring up the weather? Good question. A wet summer is likely to mean an increase in the mosquito population. You see, female mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. More rainfall means more places for mosquitoes to breed. Clogged gutters, wading pools, and even tarps covering the woodpile are all potential breeding sites for these pests. Other potential breeding places include:
- Buckets
- Bird baths
- Flowerpots
- Holes in trees and the ground
- Tires
- Outdoor garbage cans and lids
- Stagnant drain ditches
- Wheelbarrows
To prevent mosquitoes from taking over your property we recommend:
- Cleaning leaves and other debris out of gutters.
- Changing the water in bird baths and wading pools at least once a week.
- Turning over wheelbarrows, buckets, and other items that collect rainfall.
- Removing tires and other rarely used items on your property that gather water.
